A Safe Haven for Veterans Transitional Homes will provide a safe, drug-free transitional housing facility that is designed to assist veterans in need of stable housing
Our Veterans often cannot adjust to life in the mainstream and turn away help from the VA and other organizations. The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans estimates that 62,600 veterans are homeless on any given night, and around 150,000 veterans are homeless at some time during each year.
There are nearly 22 million veterans nationwide, and while there are over 800 community-based VA outpatient clients, among other facilities, serving more than 3.6 million veterans, the needs of veterans are far from being met. “The VA is in an era of unprecedented production and unprecedented demand,” according to Allison Hickey, the VA’s Under Secretary of Benefits. In addition, homelessness is a pressing problem for our veterans.
The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans states that another 1.4 million veterans are considered at risk of homelessness “due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing.” A Safe Haven for Veterans will help serve this market initially in Richmond, as there are only a handful of programs here for homeless veterans.
